Windsurfing

Windsurfing
I slowly climbed out of the cool water on to the long course board. I set my feet apart for the balance, and grasped the smooth cold metal of the blue boom. Tensing my muscles, I slowly pulled up the large clear sail. As I got the sail into position the wind caught the sail, jerking me forward out onto the smooth glassy lake.  The sun, shyly peeking over the mountains, enclosed the lake, pinking the sky.  Gliding over the water gracefully was soothing. The water parted for my board, and then rippled in waves behind me. I gazed at the water to realize that even in the morning light I could see the bottom of the lake. To my left there was a rock formation that looked like a fire pit someone had made when the water was low.  Farther out I saw a rock that I think I could have touched it if I were to reach down into the water.  As I got toward the middle, the water was so deep that I couldn’t see the bottom, just a beautiful mixture of blues and greens blended together. The mixture of colors lasted for several yards. Then slowly the sandy brown color of the lakes floor came back into my view.
Than I realized I didn’t know how to turn around. I began to think back to when I use to watch my dad windsurf in Bandon. He quickly got to the other side of the board taking the sail with him having the sail face the back space of the board. I was going to have to move fast if I didn’t want the sail to fall, taking me down with it.
I tugged softly on the boom testing its resistance to turning it. I pulled the sail forcefully toward myself, moving around the board as quickly as the sail would allow. As I got to the other side of the board I felt the sail tilt in my direction. I braced my body to hit the water. The wind seemed to grab the sail and pulled it upright.
My muddy brown hair, with hints of gold in it, waved restlessly in the wind as it carried me back to shore. I seemed to be going faster now then earlier. I was temped to jump on the back of the board to see if I could fly, but I knew I’d probably just fall off the board. I knew I wouldn’t be able to do this again for a while, so I relaxed and let the wind guide me. All too soon I was back to the beach of our campsite.
